Appearance: Rinoa is cute, but not gorgeous. Although her looks help, it’s her personality that attracts people. She has jet black hair with blonde and reddish highlights spread throughout the front which bring out her warm brown eyes. Her hair itself falls a few inches past her shoulders. She stands at around medium height (one hundred and sixty-three centimeters). It's also rather obvious looking at her that she likes the color blue, as she is almost always wearing that color or white. However, one accessory she is never seen without is her necklace with has her mother's engagement ring threaded on it.
Personality: Bright, playful, and very lively, Rinoa is a very perceptive person. It can be said she sees into people's hearts. She's extremely friendly and loves people. She also has an strong personality and an unyielding spirit, she speaks her mind without reservation. This is in spite of the fact that she's always afraid that her words will chase people off and she will wind up being alone. This is where the duality of Rinoa's personality is reveled; although, she for the most part elevates the expression "wearing your heart on your sleeve" to a whole new level; she is also a very insecure person. She sometimes doubts her abilities. Although she can be strong on her own, she is far more comfortable with someone being there to support her.
For the most part, Rinoa is unselfish and will do almost anything people she cares about most. She always puts herself before them, to the point of putting her life in danger. Rinoa's also used to getting what she wants, which makes her an interesting mixture of being spoiled and being extremely ambitious. A stubborn young woman, once she sets her mind on something, nothing will stop her from achieving that goal.
Abilities/Weapons: Rinoa is a full-fledged sorceress, one of two in her time-period. Since the magic a Sorceress carries is diffused--there is only a certain amount to go around, this means she is extremely powerful. She practically radiates magic. Not only can she move objects with her mind, she has the ability to use magic without the aid of Guardian Force, a type of artificially created spirit which enables humans to use a kind of "fake" magic called para-magic which was pioneered by Doctor Odine's studies into sorceresses. However the magic of the Sorceress is far more powerful and dangerous then any para-magic a Guardian Force can give, which can drive them to become power-addicted and drive them to insanity. This is why the people of her world fear sorceresses. However, Rinoa, although she has a natural nack for her abilities is still learning how to control them. Also when she's in the heat of battle, she sometimes sprouts wings which are made of pure magical energy.
As a weapon, she carries around a boomerang-type weapon called the Blaster Edge. She straps a type of mount to her wrist and she fires the projectile mounted on it at her enemies. She's also decently trained in martial-arts.
Weaknesses: In a fight Rinoa is not even close to being the strongest physically, so she can be tossed around really easily. She's also still rather new to being in fights and although she's gotten better, compared to others she is still inexperienced.
Personality-wise she can be loud, bossy, and annoying. She doesn't think of what could happen on account of her actions and she does things without thinking them through, and finds herself in nasty situations because of it. Also when she gets angry she can sometimes descent into childish temper tantrums.
History: Rinoa was born the child of Fury Caraway, an Officer in the Galbadian Army and Julia Heartilly, a piano player and singer of some stardom. Before Rinoa's fifth birthday though, tragedy struck and both her parents were killed in a car crash. With no relatives to take her in, she was sent to a state orphanage, where to the surprise to everyone, only a few days after she arrived an offer came from the faraway country of Esthar expressing wishes to adopt her. Seeing no reason to not agree to the offer, the officials packed up the small girl and sent her off.
To her own surprise, Rinoa was greeted by a full escort of Estharian soldiers who took her to the city to meet her new adopted father, the very President of Esthar, Laguna Loire. Laguna's first love had been Julia, whom he had meet when he was a soldier and when he learned that she had been killed, he took it upon himself to raise her only child as well as another girl named Ellone.
So Rinoa grew up in Esthar, the "Princess" of the country's beloved President. But as she grew older, she learned about the injustices and cruelties and injustices that plagued the world outside of Esthar. Especially bothering her were the cruelties of the nation she had been born in, Galbadia, who invaded it's neighbors with impunity. It was in no one's doubt that they intended to conquer the entire world if it was in their ability. To combat them, she began to dip her hands into all sorts of various freedom-fighting groups. She became well loved, for she financed them, recruited for them, and even drew up plans.
When she was seventeen, though, her world was sharply jerked for the first time when she was kidnapped by Galbadian Forces from her own home. For years she had been a wanted criminal in Galbadia for her actions, the aiding of various resistance groups and she was imprisoned without a trial within the maximum security prison within the country. However, soon after that she was inexplicably released and taken to the true power behind the puppet President of Galbadia, the Sorceress Edea. Edea for some reason seemed to have a special interest in Rinoa, though the young woman couldn't fathom why, and she could never get Edea to tell her. Frustrated at being a prisoner, Rinoa tried many times to escape from the Sorceress’s clutches, to no avail.
Her captivity continued until one day SeeD mercenaries, hired from Balamb Garden by her father to rescue her stormed the compound. A fierce battle broke out between the SeeD and the Sorceress Edea--but finally they mortally wounded her.
And that was when everything changed. For a Sorceress cannot die without passing on their powers. So Edea followed this rule. And with a flash of light and some pain Rinoa was chosen to be the next in the Succession of Witches.
Due to the sheer amount of power that flowed through her in that instant, her body was unable to adjust and she fell into a deep coma. The SeeD's, ignorant of what had just transpired took her slumbering body back to Esthar. Weeks later, she awakened. After a joyful reception by her Father and all of the country, Rinoa slowly began to realize what had happened, and what she had become. A Descendent of Hyne--a witch. However, before she could tell anyone that she was a Sorceress, she was possessed by a Sorceress who could reach across space and time--Ultimecia. The Sorceress from the far future desired one thing, the complete compression of time, an existence in which only Ultimecia could exist.
In order to accomplish this feat Ultimecia could control the minds of Sorceress's, and now with Rinoa under her control, she set the new sorceress about doing her dirty work. She made Rinoa murder hundreds of Estharian officials and other figures. This continued until finally people months later finally traced the killing back to her. Knowing that she couldn't make a Sorceress who had powers as even as great Rinoa's fight against the combined might of SeeD and President Loire's troops, Ultimecia made Rinoa flee from the city, and then tried to make use of Rinoa to unleash another Sorceress who had been sealed years earlier by Laguna Loire, the mad Sorceress Adel, who Ultimecia knew would help her in her objective.
However, before Rinoa could be forced to do this, she was caught in a carefully laid trap by the SeeD--who after a raging battle, smacked an Odine bracelet--a magic-sealing device on her. This also banished the presence of Ultimecia from Rinoa's mind. The SeeD then took her to her father.
Rinoa had only at times been half-aware (and blessingly, very rarely fully aware) of what she had been forced to do with her own body. But Rinoa knew exactly how dangerous she-- and though her Ultimecia were. In hushed tones, it was gradually concluded that there was only one option; Rinoa would have to be taken to the Sorceress Memorial and sealed within like Sorceress Adel had once been.
This would have happened too, if she had not been called to Econtra while she was on the way to her supposed "final fate".
